Murmur is a quaint, classic cocktail bar secretively hidden away down one of Melbourne’s famous laneways. In what was once a coffee and spice warehouse, Murmur has been transformed into a cozy and relaxed environment whilst still maintaining much of its old school charm. Speaking of old charm… here at Murmur we endeavour to provide our customers with excellent cocktails, wine, beer and spirits, a laidback atmosphere in which to enjoy them, as well as good old fashioned service. Be sure to ask one of our friendly staff if you need help deciding which delicious beverage you’re in the mood for tonight.
Thankyou to all who helped make our last cocktail list a great success. For your support we’ve kept a couple of the old favourites on our new list. Frankly, however, it’s time to streamline. Sixty-odd cocktails was far too many to expect you all to read, and far, far too many for us to remember after our third beer. As usual, if you’re after something that’s not on the list, or feel like venturing into the unknown, ask one of the bartenders to make something up according to your taste.
Because we like sampling new beers and spirits, our shelves are constantly in flux. As such it’s difficult to provide for all of them on our menu. If you walk in to see the staff grinning maniacally and generally acting more foolish than usual, congratulations: it’s new beer and whiskey day! Feel free to enjoy it with us.
Oh and yes, we realise this is a long introduction, so if you got through it – well done you!!!!

Here at Murmur, we love hosting functions. We pride ourselves on our ability to cater to any occasion and will do all that is required to make sure the guests have a good time. To the small and intimate birthday gathering, the casual corporate function, the elegant and classy cocktail party, the hands-on cocktail making class, to the hedonistic, balls-to-the-wall razz fest (or to the dance ‘til you drop celebration)... we say bring it on. Even if you’re planning simply to pop in with some friends for a drink, let us know so we can look after you and make the night a bit special. Murmur is lucky enough to trade alongside highly regarded tapas restaurant Portello Rosso, and offers a range of Spanish tapas selections for functions, as well as for the casual drinker. Murmur is a cocktail bar. Over the years we’ve proven ourselves to be amongst the best in Melbourne and pride ourselves on offering the perfect beer, wine or spirit for the occasion, or making a cocktail suited to you. We endeavour to provide friendly, casual, knowledgeable service, and be there for a chat if the need arises. Having said that, Murmur is also a bar… a place one goes to have a good time. We would be nothing if it weren’t for our regular customers who keep coming back week after week, because they enjoy themselves. If you want to stand at the bar and discuss the intricacies of sugar syrup reductions, the origin of French Agricole or the size of Jack Daniels’ johnson (whether or not Jack Daniels wore underwear), that’s cool with us.
If you’re keen to hide away in the corner and play footsies with a loved one or potential life partner, go nuts. If you fancy bopping along to funk, soul and hip hop with our DJs on a Saturday night, be our guest. We like to have fun while we work and in turn, like our customers to do the same. If you spy us singing and dancing behind the bar, we’re not auditioning for the Sydney version of Jersey Boys, and we’re definitely not entering our team in Australia’s Got Talent. We’re simply having a good time. Join us, you just might like it.

Murmur Bar opened in February 2004. A heritage listed property located in a quiet alley in the Melbourne CBD, the venue has been through a number of incarnations in its 120 year history. Originally operated as a Coffee and Spice Import Warehouse, Murmur retains a number of features from that time – most noticeably the original crane and trapdoor that create some of the main features of Murmur Bar.
Since opening, Murmur has developed a reputation for being one of the finest cocktail bars in the land. In 2007, we were named Australian cocktail bar of the year, and in 2009 we were nominated in the best small bar category. These days, whilst proud of past accomplishments, we’re happiest on a busy night, making drinks and seeing our customers having a good time.
